One thought comes to mind after reading 684 pages of Obama’s proposed stimulus plan – marijuana. And I don’t mean smoking it, I mean selling marijuana for profit. After all, it will soon be too expensive to be employed in the private sector legally. At least in the black market, you still have a shot at enjoying your hard earned money albeit criminally. Nearly 180 pages in, I fully understood why so few Republicans voted for this bill and why many Democrats also opposed it. This bill has very little to do with stimulating the economy and creating jobs. In fact, the only thing it stimulates is liberal special interest groups. Aren’t you happy to know that some $19 million dollars is going into the new Health and Human Services building? Okay, it’s not just a new building their moving into, the rest of the money will go towards preventing AIDS and HIV. What about the Panel made up of five members appointed by the president who make recommendations to the Board (made up of seven members appointed by the president) to “prevent waste, fraud and abuse in federal spending”? You will be equally happy to know that those five members of the Panel and the seven members of the Board get to divvy up $14 million dollars to carry out those tasks including travel expenses. Where do I sign up? Let’s see, $200 million dollars towards remodeling the Department of Agriculture Buildings, $245 million dollars towards modernizing  the information technology system (whose information technology system?) and who can turn away the 4.5 billion dollars to modernize the armed forces barracks? Read on…

Sick of hearing about the “green movement” yet? Don’t get me wrong, there are many times that I would like to burn someone in the face with their own cigarette butt that they carelessly threw on the ground or boycott a company that dumps thousands upon thousands of gallons of waste into clean water. But there’s a difference between good ethics and jumping on a bandwagon. Even if you are fond of the “going green” movement, now you are paying for it whether you wanted to or not: $350 million dollars towards watershed and flood prevention operations (with an additional $50 million appropriated for the “Watershed Rehabilitation Program”), $800 million dollars towards habitat restoration and mitigation activities, and a $200 million dollar budget towards cleaning up underground tank storage.

This one is quite interesting and comes directly from the stimulus plan “50 million dollars to be distributed in direct grants to fund arts projects and activities which preserve jobs in the non-profit art sector threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current downturn”. Now that is a mouthful. People CAN’T support art or any other support-seeking organization in an economy such as this – we need to focus money towards the more necessary things in life such as food and heating our houses. But apparently the chaos clouds the facts. We’re in an economic crisis and most of those in office want to take action to please the many (on the surface) and sort out the details later hoping that the economy doesn’t implode on itself in the meantime.

In all fairness to Obama, he is trying to create jobs by improving/modernizing/cleaning up America. But a business owner can’t afford to put an accountant to work on remodeling the office just to keep her employed. The stimulus bill is simply a very expensive band-aid to the problem at hand. What happens when the stimulus projects are completed and the money is spent? Where does the money come from when no one can afford to pay taxes in a private sector job anymore because of major tax increases to support stimulus bills? And if everyone is on welfare or employed by the government, who pays taxes to support welfare and government checks? Discuss…
