Wrong video of health protest spurs N-word feud.
I read an article about a group of protestors in Washington DC on March 20. According to the AP, “Three Democratic congressmen — all black — say they heard racial slurs as they walked through thousands of angry protesters outside the U.S. Capitol. A white lawmaker says he heard the epithets too.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_n_word_feud. “It was March 20, near the end of the bitter health care debate, when Reps. John Lewis, Andre Carson and Emanuel Cleaver say that some demonstrators, many of them tea party activists, yelled the “N-word” as the congressmen walked from House office buildings to the Capitol.” Now, I’m gonna ask what may seem like a stupid question here. How did they know the political orientation of the individuals shouting these slurs, not to mention which individuals were actually doing the shouting? Out of “thousands of angry protestors” they were able to pick out and identify them as Tea Party activists/Conservatives? Did they ask for ID? “Excuse me sir, I couldn’t help hearing that you’re shouting the “N” word at me. Could I please ask your official political party affiliation?” I’m sorry, but I can’t see that happening. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is possible, however unlikely, that some of those racial slurs were shouted by Liberals! Yes, there are Liberals against the health care bill too! Furthermore, what difference does it make who shouted what? At least it wasn’t bullets or rotten vegetables they were throwing! They were exercising their right to free speech, and if their level of maturity/intellect restricts them to slurs and names, well, it is offensive, but it is their right. Lime green Volkswagen Beetles are offensive as well, but people do buy and drive them! The sadder side of this is the Congressmen’s behavior. By making such a big issue out of some name calling and/or racial slurs by a small number of intellectually-challenged people, they give credence to ignorance. And by participating at all, they lower themselves to the same level by association. People elected to Congress are there in part because their constituency believed them to be of a higher emotional and intellectual maturity level than average. People in such positions of authority should be able to demonstrate a tolerance for many types of criticism, for you just can’t make all the people happy all the time, and such criticisms are inevitable. Maybe their constituency was wrong, and it’s time to reevaluate their employment.
The article goes on to state; “Conservative activists say the lawmakers are lying.” ‘It didn’t happen,’ said Breitbart, who wasn’t there. ‘This is 2010. Even a racist is media-savvy enough not to yell the N-word.’ “That’s reassuring. He wasn’t even there and he can state unequivocally, “it didn’t happen”? I hate to be the one to disappoint Mr. Breitbart, but we probably aren’t talking about very “savvy” characters here to begin with, let alone “media savvy”. To accuse the Congressmen of “lying” is absolutely ludicrous. Though they may have many reasons or motivations for lying about it, I don’t believe they would. I have no doubt that this actually did take place. But to accuse them of lying demonstrates the same level of reduced maturity/intellect that the people they’re accusing have demonstrated. Again they have lowered themselves to the same level by association.
And the news media, for even putting this story in print. Well, I rest my case!
